Job fair on Thursday aims to help Orlando veterans and their spouses

Orlando Sentinel - 6/7/2021

Orlando’s first in-person job fair for veterans since the start of the pandemic will be held 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday at the Avanti Palms Resort and Conference Center on International Drive.

The Orlando Veterans Job Fair will give veterans, military spouses, transitioning military and members of the National Guard and National Reserves a chance to meet with potential employers face-to-face.

Host RecruitMilitary has held virtual events since the start of the pandemic last March.

“While our virtual events provided a way for us to connect with our job candidates and employers throughout 2020, we’re ready to turn the page and bring veterans and employers together in person for meaningful career opportunities,” said RecruitMilitary CEO Tim Best.

Veterans account for nearly 7% of the U.S. workforce, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The latest report showed the unemployment rate for veterans in April was 5.2% nationwide. Historically, veterans have faced hurdles convincing civilian employers to recognize their skill sets, a problem even greater for disabled veterans.

The fair sports 39 exhibitors, including Orange County Fire & Rescue, First Command Financial Services and Everglades Boats. Exhibitors such as Sealed Air are hiring specifically for skill sets common to people with military training.

According to RecruitMilitary, distribution, supply chain, logistics and data storage are industries that hire heavily from veteran communities.
