Strictly Business: Here's a list of Veterans Day discounts and freebies in the Fayetteville area

Fayetteville Observer - 11/8/2019

Nov. 8--Because of Fayetteville's close proximity to Fort Bragg and the large number of soldiers who make their homes in the area, most every day in Fayetteville can seem like Veterans Day.

We're a military town, where the uniformed soldiers of Fort Bragg are embraced and often thanked for their service. A large number of residents who settled here served in the past.

Throughout the year, many local restaurants and retail stores offer special discounts, often 10% off a purchase, to active-duty and retired service members with proper identification. From their point of view, it's just good business.

Still, Veterans Day retains special meaning to so many in Fayetteville and throughout the nation.

With the federal holiday in mind, some businesses are honoring the members of the U.S. Armed Forces with special deals. Among those that have been announced:

? Kohl's will be giving active-duty service members, veterans and their immediate families 30% off store items nationwide through Monday.

The discount, which doubles its regular once-a-week military discount of 15%, first became available Thursday. Each week, Kohl's officers military service members, veterans and their families 15% off on the store's Military Mondays.

? Veterans will receive a free lunch at Texas Roadhouse on Veterans Day. That includes chain locations in Fayetteville on North Pointe Drive and in Aberdeen on North Sandhills Boulevard in Moore County.

According to the company, all active, retired or former military will be able to select one of 10 entrees from the restaurant's special Veterans Day menu. Those include a 6-ounce sirloin and two sides along with a choice of any Coca-Cola product, iced tea or coffee. Proof of service includes military or VA card, or discharge papers.

Hours for this free lunch at Texas Roadhouse are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

? On Monday, Food Lion grocery stores are offering a 10% discount to active and retired military personnel "to show its appreciation for neighbors who are serving or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces," the company said in a news release.

To receive the discount, the company said in the release, active-duty military, veterans and their families must present their Food Lion MVP card, along with military identification, if available, at the time of checkout. Customers will then get 10% off their entire grocery bill.

The discount does not apply to the purchase of alcohol, tobacco, gift cards, lottery, postage stamps or services.

? All active-duty and retired U.S. military personnel will receive a free meal on Veterans Day from On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina, according to a news release.

The dine-in only meal will include two items served with beans and rice from a select menu.

To receive the offer, valid military identification is required. The Fayetteville location is at 115 Glensford Drive in the Glensford Commons Shopping Center.

? Plenty of other businesses are thanking military retirees and active-duty soldiers with free meals or deeper discounts on Veterans Day, including: Applebee's, Chili's Grill & Bar, Publix, Golden Corral, Red Robin, Mission BBQ, IHOP, Subway, Outback, Cici's Pizza, Joe's Crab Shack, Little Caesar's, Home Depot. Dollar General, Rack Room Shoes, and Bed Bath and Beyond, according to a listing compiled by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

? If you're in the mood for a day-drive destination, Tryon Palace in New Bern -- the official residence and administrative headquarters of the British governors of North Carolina from 1770 to 1775 -- is offering free admission to all active-duty and military veterans and their dependents and minor children on Sunday. That's because Tryon Palace is closed Mondays.

The free admission will include access to the Governor's Palace, historic homes, the N.C. History Center and 16 acres of gardens. Military ID or proof of service is required.

? Strictly Business made an error in last week's column.

The Salsarita's that just opened at Freedom Town Center, at the corner of Skibo and Cliffdale roads, is not the first one to open in Fayetteville. There used to be one just outside Cross Creek Mall, where Zoe's Kitchen now occupies that part of the retail outparcel. That original Salsarita's location opened in 2006 and remained open through at least the early stages of the 2010s.
