WaterFire Providence to feature Salute to Veterans

PROVIDENCE -- Saturday's full lighting at Waterfire Providence will feature the annual Salute to Veterans, honoring all U.S. veterans and active and reserve military personnel and their families.

Opening ceremonies begin at 4 p.m. at the Rhode Island State House, with remarks by Kasim Yarn, director of the state Office of Veterans Affairs, and a keynote address by Dora Vasquez-Hellner, Junior Vice Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Departmentof Rhode Island.

At 5:45 p.m., 150 veterans will march from the State House steps to Waterplace Park Basin, led by the Rhode Island Professional Firefighters Pipes and Drums, for the lighting ceremony, which will feature a performance by the Navy Band Northeast and the Army 88th Band. At 6:18 p.m. in Waterplace Park Basin, there will be a Memorial Canoe Ceremony to remember fallen members of the military.

A Veterans Resource Fair will be open from 3 to 10 p.m. on Washington Street and the Washington Street Bridge, offering resources to veterans and their families. Monuments at Memorial Park on South Main Street will be illuminated and decorated with wreaths.

An artisan fair on Washington and Steeple streets will run from 3 to 10 p.m., offering sculpture, jewelry and more by Rhode Island-based artists, and the "Starry, Starry Night" installation of hanging blue stars and twinkling luminaria will shine at Memorial Park.

Guided walking tours are available at 3 and 4:30 p.m., for $15.
