Waxahachie investigators believe mental health led husband to stab wife, shoot himself Tuesday morning

The Waxahachie Daily Light - 9/6/2017

Sept. 06--WAXAHACHIE -- A believed murder-suicide required Waxahachie Police and the department's SWAT team to force entry into a home in the 200 block of Bent Creek Drive on Tuesday morning.

Both residents, a 57-year-old woman and her 62-year-old husband, are dead.

According to Waxahachie Police Lt. Todd Woodruff, officers were dispatched to the two-story home after a report of a female lying in her front yard with a stab wound.

"Officers arrived to find a stabbing victim in the front yard. The 57-year-old woman was conscious and told officers that she had been stabbed by her husband, who was still inside the home," Woodruff said.

He added that detectives learned from a relative that the man had access to a rifle inside the home.

"We tried contacting the man by telephone and eventually threw in our own phone to try to communicate with him," Woodruff explained. He also noted detectives requested and obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect.

After several hours of no activity from inside the home, the Waxahachie Police SWAT team forced entry and found the 62-year-old man already deceased. Woodruff stated it appears he died from a self-inflicted wound.

"At 4:30 p.m., investigators were still at the residence processing the scene. A relative told our detectives that the man's mental health seemed to have declined in recent weeks," Woodruff said. "We don't show to have responded to any prior calls at the residence."

The female victim was transported to Methodist Hospital where she has since passed away. The incident remains under investigation by the Waxahachie Police Department
